Tallgrass Initiates Open Season for 400-Mile Trailblazer CO2 Pipeline

(P&GJ) — Trailblazer CO2 Pipeline LLC, a subsidiary of Tallgrass Energy based in Kansas, has initiated a binding open season to solicit commitments for the transportation of carbon dioxide gas from origins in Nebraska. Customers are invited to participate in exchange for incentive tariff rates.

The Trailblazer pipeline spans from the Cheyenne Hub in Weld County, Colorado, to Gage County, Nebraska, where it interfaces with the interstate pipeline systems managed by Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America LLC and Northern Natural Gas Company.

In 2023, Trailblazer submitted a proposal to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to convert 392 miles of its existing 436-mile 36-inch natural gas pipeline to CO2 service.

As part of the conversion plan outlined in the application to FERC, Trailblazer intends to decommission various facilities, including 392 miles of pipeline, gas-fired and electric compressor stations with a total capacity of 60,000 horsepower, and the Clay Interconnect delivery point in Clay County, Nebraska, owned by Tallgrass Interstate Gas Transmission, LLC.

The pipeline infrastructure is designed to transport CO2 captured from agricultural and industrial facilities in Colorado and other Western states to deep saline aquifer formations in Wyoming and Nebraska for permanent and secure storage.

The open season for commitments will last for 21 days, beginning on May 3, 2024.
