DOT Awards $86 Million for Pipeline Safety Covering 85% of U.S. Network

DOT has announced $86 million in grants for state pipeline safety programs, supporting inspections of more than 85% of the U.S. pipeline network.

(P&GJ) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced $86 million in federal grants to strengthen state pipeline safety programs.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will administer the funds, which support state inspections covering more than 85% of the nation’s 3.3-million-mile pipeline network.

“Safety is the number one priority of the Department of Transportation,” Duffy said. “The grants announced today will support our existing partnership with states to support pipeline inspection, keep communities safe, and keep our energy economy moving.”

PHMSA Acting Administrator Ben Kochman emphasized the role of state regulators. “We remain committed to supporting them through grants, training, and other essential resources needed to accomplish their safety mission,” he said.

The FY 2025 grants include $82 million in Pipeline Safety State Base Grants and $4 million in Underground Natural Gas Storage Grants. Both programs reimburse up to 80% of state costs tied to pipeline inspection, enforcement, and safety activities.
