Sasol Flags Safety Risks from Encroaching Settlement Near Johannesburg Gas Pipeline
Sasol is working with Johannesburg officials to address safety risks after an informal settlement encroached on its Homestead Park gas pipeline. The company has reduced pipeline pressure and urged municipal action to ensure public safety.
(P&GJ) — Sasol has raised safety concerns after identifying an informal settlement encroaching on its gas pipeline right-of-way in Homestead Park, located in Johannesburg’s Laanglagte North area.
According to the company, a risk review and assessment confirmed that the nearby settlement lies within the designated risk impact zone of the operating pipeline. Sasol said it immediately notified the City of Johannesburg — which owns the affected land — and submitted findings and recommendations to the city manager, awaiting an official response.
“Sasol emphasizes that it does not have the legal authority to remove individuals or communities residing along the gas pipeline servitude,” the company stated. “The company relies on ongoing collaboration with relevant municipal and governmental authorities to address such matters in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.”
As a precaution, Sasol said it has reduced pressure in the affected section of the pipeline to minimize public exposure to risk and limit the safety impact zone to roughly 82 feet (25 meters).
The company said it continues to engage with the City of Johannesburg to develop long-term safety solutions and conducts regular awareness campaigns for residents living near its gas pipeline network. These sessions, held jointly with municipal emergency services, focus on safe practices and emergency preparedness.
“Sasol takes this matter seriously and remains committed to ensuring the safety of communities and the integrity of its pipeline infrastructure,” the company said.
