Coral Norte FLNG Wins EPC Contract, Doubling Mozambique LNG Capacity
Mozambique is preparing for a major LNG expansion as developers advance a new floating liquefaction project designed to build on an existing offshore success.
(P&GJ) — A consortium led by Technip Energies, JGC and Samsung Heavy Industries has secured an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the Coral Norte floating LNG project offshore Mozambique.
The project, being developed by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), is designed to produce approximately 3.6 MMtpy of LNG. Combined with the existing Coral South FLNG facility, the expansion will increase the Coral development's total LNG production capacity to about 7 MMtpy.
Located in Mozambique's offshore Area 4 gas block, Coral Norte is backed by Eni and its partners CNPC, ENH, XRG and KOGAS. The project is based on the design of the Coral South FLNG facility, which began operations in 2022 and became the first floating LNG project developed in Mozambique.
Developers said the replication strategy is intended to reduce project risk and improve execution efficiency by leveraging existing engineering designs, operating experience and lessons learned from Coral South.
The expansion is expected to strengthen Mozambique's position as one of Africa's leading LNG producers while providing additional export capacity to global LNG markets.
Technip Energies said the contract, together with previously announced agreements related to the project, exceeds €1 billion in total value for the company.
Arnaud Pieton, CEO of Technip Energies, said the project demonstrates continued confidence in the consortium's FLNG execution capabilities and the performance of the Coral South facility. He added that a standardized project approach can help accelerate delivery of new offshore LNG capacity.
