Officials Celebrate Opening of New Pipeline in Arkansas
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas officials are celebrating the opening of a $200 million, 210-mile pipeline that will transport gasoline, diesel and jet fuel into the state.
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson joined other top elected officials Wednesday to mark the start of the Magellan Midstream Partners pipeline system from Fort Smith to Little Rock. The pipeline became operational on July 5 and has a capacity to transport 75,000 barrels a day. The system includes 150 miles of existing pipe and 60 miles of new construction.
The system’s opening comes three years after an ExxonMobil pipeline leak that spilled roughly 3,190 barrels of oil near Mayflower and Lake Conway in 2013. Magellan officials say their pipeline system has several safety features, including devices to check for any defects and real-time monitoring.
