Clean Energy Lands Puerto Rico LNG Infrastructure Projects

As Puerto Rico seeks more reliable power sources, one LNG provider is expanding into the market with projects aimed at strengthening energy security and resilience.

(P&GJ) — Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has secured two contracts to design and install liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling systems in Puerto Rico, marking the company's first LNG infrastructure projects on the island.

The projects will support gas-to-power applications for a pharmaceutical manufacturer and P.R. Energy Partners, a Puerto Rico-based energy infrastructure developer.

Under one agreement, Clean Energy will provide LNG station equipment and installation for a pharmaceutical production facility seeking to improve energy reliability for its operations.

The second project calls for Clean Energy to design and build an LNG supply station that will fuel a six-megawatt combined heat and power plant serving residential and hotel developments operated by P.R. Energy Partners.

Eduardo Cortes, managing partner of P.R. Energy Partners, said the project is intended to provide reliable power while supporting a more resilient electric grid in Puerto Rico.

The contracts represent Clean Energy's first LNG supply infrastructure projects in Puerto Rico and will support a combined 10 megawatts of installed power generation capacity.

Sean Columbia, general manager of CE Technologies, said the projects expand the company's LNG infrastructure business into new markets and demonstrate growing demand for natural gas-based energy systems.

Clean Energy said its modular LNG infrastructure can be used to provide primary or backup power for industrial facilities, hospitals, data centers, ports and other energy-intensive operations in areas facing grid constraints.

The company noted that LNG can offer lower emissions than diesel or fuel oil while providing a reliable fuel source for power generation applications.
