German, Dutch Operators Map Cross-Border Hydrogen Pipeline Links
German and Dutch gas operators have agreed to explore converting existing pipelines for cross-border hydrogen transport, laying early groundwork for future hydrogen links between the Netherlands, Germany and neighboring markets.
(P&GJ) — Thyssengas and Gasunie have agreed on a framework to explore cross-border hydrogen pipeline connections between Germany and the Netherlands.
Under a joint development agreement, the two gas network operators will assess converting existing natural gas pipelines to transport hydrogen at connection points near Oude Statenzijl in the Dutch province of Groningen and Vlieghuis in Drenthe.
The proposed links could enable hydrogen flows between Dutch industrial hubs, import terminals, storage and production facilities and major German demand centers, including industrial clusters in the Ruhr region and chemical sites in the Rhineland.
The agreement outlines shared technical standards and organizational responsibilities, providing an initial foundation for potential hydrogen interconnections across northwest Europe.
“The agreement reached enables transport not only via our infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany, but also to and from Denmark,” said Helmie Botter, director of hydrogen transport at Gasunie.
