Nigeria Containment Effort Stabilizes Leak on Key Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline

Nigeria’s NNPC has contained a leak on the critical Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline following last week’s explosion and has isolated the affected sections, with joint inspections now underway. The 2.2 Bcf/d system is a vital supply corridor for power plants and industrial users across southwest Nigeria.

(Reuters) - Nigeria’s state-owned NNPC Ltd. has contained a leak on the Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline following an explosion reported on Dec. 10 in South West Warri, the company confirmed Monday. The operator said the affected segment has been safely isolated as inspection and assessment work continues.

According to NNPC, a joint team comprising the company, Nigeria’s midstream regulator, and maintenance contractors conducted an initial site inspection over the weekend. The coordinated response focused on protecting nearby communities and mitigating environmental risks.

The Escravos–Lagos pipeline system—capable of transporting up to 2.2 Bcf/d—is one of Nigeria’s most critical midstream assets, supplying gas to power plants and industrial consumers across the southwest region. Additional investigative and repair activities are expected to continue as authorities evaluate the full extent of the damage and restoration requirements.
