Türkiye Launches 101-km Subsea Natural Gas Pipeline to Northern Cyprus
Türkiye has launched development of a 101-kilometer subsea natural gas pipeline connecting the country with Northern Cyprus, a project aimed at improving energy security and supporting future regional gas flows.
(P&GJ) — Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have signed agreements to begin development of a 101-kilometer (63-mile) subsea natural gas pipeline that will connect the two territories beneath the Mediterranean Sea and support electricity generation and long-term energy security.
The project includes approximately 97 kilometers (60 miles) of offshore pipeline and 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) onshore, extending from Anamur, Türkiye, to Teknecik, Northern Cyprus. According to Türkiye's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the system will consist of two 22-inch pipelines designed for bidirectional gas transportation.
Officials said the project will include import terminals and related infrastructure needed to supply natural gas to Northern Cyprus while providing flexibility for future regional gas flows.
Türkiye Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said the infrastructure is intended to strengthen the island's long-term energy supply.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said construction work will begin following the signing of the agreements.
"We are launching work on the construction of the natural gas pipeline system that will run underwater between Türkiye and the TRNC," Bayraktar said.
Bayraktar said the project is designed to improve electricity reliability by replacing more expensive liquid fuels with natural gas.
"This project will ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply and further strengthen the strategic cooperation between our countries," he said.
The minister added that the pipeline's bidirectional design could eventually allow natural gas to move between Türkiye and Northern Cyprus and potentially onward to European markets.
Officials also said the project supports broader electrification initiatives as Türkiye prepares to host the COP31 climate conference in Antalya.
