First Hydrogen Plant Connects to Dutch Pipeline Network

The Netherlands has connected its first large-scale hydrogen plant to a national pipeline network, marking a key step in linking industrial users to emerging hydrogen infrastructure.

(P&GJ) — Gasunie’s subsidiary Hynetwork has connected a large-scale hydrogen production facility to the Netherlands’ emerging hydrogen pipeline system, marking a key milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure buildout.

The connection links the 200-megawatt Holland Hydrogen 1 plant at Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte industrial area to the national hydrogen network, making it the first green hydrogen facility tied directly into the system.

The milestone was completed through a final weld — often referred to as the “golden weld” — between the plant and the pipeline. Contractor Hanab carried out the connection work.

The project represents an early step in building out a broader hydrogen transport network designed to connect industrial users across the Netherlands and, eventually, into wider northwest European markets.

The pipeline segment tied to the project spans about 32 kilometers (20 miles) and was brought into service earlier this year after being filled with hydrogen and pressurized for operations.

The line runs largely alongside the A15 corridor, where multiple energy infrastructure assets are already concentrated, including a carbon dioxide pipeline supporting the Porthos carbon capture and storage project.

Developers say integrating hydrogen production directly into pipeline infrastructure is expected to play a central role in reducing emissions from heavy industry and scaling up hydrogen use across the region.
