Woodside Signs Gas Supply Deal with Alcoa in Western Australia
A new long-term gas agreement will help supply one of Western Australia's largest industrial sectors while adding to domestic gas availability later this decade.
(P&GJ) — Woodside Energy has signed a gas supply agreement with Alcoa of Australia that will provide 31.1 petajoules (PJ) of domestic natural gas from Woodside's Western Australian operations between 2027 and 2030, according to the company.
The gas will be delivered to Alcoa's alumina refineries in Western Australia, supporting operations that supply feedstock for aluminum production. The agreement extends a longstanding commercial relationship between the two companies and adds to Woodside's portfolio of domestic gas contracts in the state.
Woodside said the contract will contribute to Western Australia's domestic gas supply and support industrial energy demand later this decade. The company noted that the agreement follows state government approval in late 2025 to extend operation of the Pluto-Karratha Gas Plant Interconnector, allowing additional Pluto-sourced gas to be processed through existing infrastructure and delivered to market.
Mark Abbotsford, Woodside's executive vice president of marketing and chief commercial officer, said the agreement supports continued gas deliveries to Western Australian industry and reflects ongoing demand from major industrial users.
Woodside has supplied natural gas to Western Australia for more than four decades. In 2025, the company said its share of the state's domestic gas production totaled 90.3 PJ, representing about 21% of Western Australia's gas supply. The company said it remains engaged with customers regarding additional supply opportunities beyond 2026.
