CMA CGM NOTRE DAME Completes First Bio-LNG Bunkering Operation in Rotterdam

CMA CGM's NOTRE DAME, the world's largest LNG-powered container ship, completed a record 11,125-cubic-meter bio-LNG bunkering in Rotterdam, marking the company's largest such operation to date.

(P&GJ) — CMA CGM's NOTRE DAME, the world's largest LNG-powered container ship, has completed its first bunkering operation in Rotterdam, taking on 11,125 cubic meters of bio-LNG in what the company said is its largest bio-LNG bunkering operation to date.

The fuel was supplied by TotalEnergies' LNG bunkering vessel and produced in Europe from biomethane derived from agricultural and organic waste.

Commissioned in May 2026, the 24,212-TEU vessel is the largest container ship sailing under the French flag. It was designed to operate on LNG and is compatible with bio-LNG today, with the ability to use synthetic fuels such as e-methane in the future.

According to CMA CGM, the operation is among the largest bio-LNG bunkering operations completed globally and supports development of a green shipping corridor between Rotterdam and Asia.

Bio-LNG, or liquefied biomethane, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by at least 67% compared with conventional marine fuels while utilizing existing LNG bunkering infrastructure.

The company said the milestone builds on its LNG-powered fleet strategy, which began with the deployment of the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE in 2020.

"This operation illustrates CMA CGM's determination to pursue its decarbonization strategy while supporting the development of European renewable fuel value chains for maritime transport."

CMA CGM said it continues investing in LNG-, methanol- and future low-carbon-fueled vessels as part of its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
