SOCAR Expands European Gas Sales to Germany, Austria via TAP Pipeline

SOCAR has begun delivering Azerbaijani natural gas to Germany and Austria via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, expanding its footprint in Central Europe under the Southern Gas Corridor.

(P&GJ) — SOCAR has begun supplying Azerbaijani natural gas to Germany and Austria via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, marking a new phase in the company’s European gas exports, the company said Jan. 16.

“SOCAR has begun a new important stage in gas exports from Azerbaijan, selling significant amounts of gas to the markets of Southern and Central Europe via TAP, which is the European segment of the Southern Gas Corridor. Starting from January 2026, Azerbaijani gas, in addition to other countries, is being supplied to customers from Austria and Germany,” the company said.

SOCAR said the new deliveries reach Germany and Austria via Italy and “further expand the geographical reach of Azerbaijani gas in Europe.”

“The number of countries receiving Azerbaijani gas has reached 16. SOCAR, in accordance with its gas strategy, is constantly expanding its gas marketing activities in the regions of Europe and the Middle East, increasing its portfolio of cooperation with buyers from various countries and further strengthening Azerbaijan's position as a reliable energy supplier,” the company said.

SOCAR did not disclose volumes associated with the new deliveries. However, Germany’s state-backed gas importer SEFE signed a 10-year contract with SOCAR in June 2025 that will gradually increase to 15 terawatt-hours per year, equivalent to about 1.5 billion cubic meters (Bcm).

According to Azerbaijan’s Energy Ministry, the country exported 25.2 billion cubic meters (890 Bcf) of natural gas in 2025, unchanged from 2024 levels. Of that total, 12.8 Bcm (452 Bcf) went to Europe, 9.6 Bcm (339 Bcf) to Turkey — including 5.6 Bcm (198 Bcf) via the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline — 2.3 Bcm (81 Bcf) to Georgia, and 0.5 Bcm (18 Bcf) to Syria.
