Colorado Agencies Investigate Gas Gathering Line Leak Near Fort Lupton

Colorado regulators shut in a 6-inch natural gas gathering line near Fort Lupton after air monitoring detected elevated benzene and methane levels, triggering an ongoing multi-agency investigation.

(P&GJ) — State agencies are investigating a pipeline-related gas leak north of Fort Lupton, Colorado, after air quality monitoring detected elevated emissions near Weld County Road 20, prompting the shutdown of a natural gas gathering line.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) identified elevated levels of benzene on Jan. 26 through mobile air monitoring and a temporary stationary monitor deployed near the site. Methane was also detected during targeted monitoring closer to nearby gas infrastructure.

The Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) led the on-site investigation, using drone mapping, optical gas imaging, and remote methane detection technology to locate the source of the emissions. Officials determined that an exposed pipe capped during the investigation was not responsible and instead traced the emissions to soil near a 6-inch natural gas gathering line.

Under ECMC direction, the operator shut in and depressurized the affected gathering line. Monitoring following that action showed a significant reduction in gas signatures, according to state officials. CDPHE and ECMC will continue monitoring to confirm whether emissions have fully stopped, while the operator prepares further investigation and repairs.

The monitoring area is adjacent to a school bus stop located about half a mile east of U.S. Highway 85. State agencies coordinated with local officials, emergency services, and the Fort Lupton School District after identifying the proximity to student transportation routes. Emergency services reported no immediate safety action was required.

Out of an abundance of caution, agencies shared monitoring information with the school district and discussed precautionary measures while monitoring continues. The district has been briefed and will receive updates as additional data becomes available.

State agencies emphasized their coordinated response:

“State agencies are working closely together, using advanced air monitoring and detection technology to identify the source of the emissions and take swift action to reduce potential risk. Our shared priority is protecting public health and safety while monitoring continues and repairs are completed.”

Agencies said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
