Boardwalk Targets Gulf Coast Demand with Petal Storage Open Season in Mississippi
Boardwalk Pipeline Partners has launched an open season for new firm natural gas storage capacity at its Petal Gas Storage facility, targeting rising demand driven by LNG exports and power-sector needs.
(P&GJ) — Gulf South Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, has launched an open season for new firm natural gas storage capacity at its Petal Gas Storage facility, the company said Jan. 21.
The open season targets additional high-deliverability capacity at the Petal complex, a salt-dome storage facility positioned near Gulf Coast supply and downstream markets in the Southeast and along LNG export corridors. Boardwalk said the expansion effort is supported by two anchor shippers, signaling customer demand for flexible storage services.
Boardwalk operates approximately 200 Bcf of working natural gas storage capacity across multiple assets in the U.S., which it said play a growing role in balancing supply and demand amid rising LNG exports, increased power-sector gas use, and greater market volatility.
“Storage is no longer a background service. It is becoming the backbone of reliability,” said Scott Hallam, president and chief executive officer. “Boardwalk is well-positioned to meet this moment with assets that can expand, respond and deliver.”
In addition to Petal, the company highlighted future expansion potential at two other storage assets. The Choctaw Storage facility, operated by Boardwalk Storage Company, is a salt-dome site with geological capacity for additional caverns. The Midland Storage Complex, operated by Texas Gas Transmission, is a reservoir-based asset that could be expanded to support Midwest and Southeast balancing needs.
Boardwalk said its integrated pipeline and storage network provides connectivity between producing basins, LNG terminals, and major demand centers, positioning the company to respond to evolving storage requirements.
“Boardwalk's storage platform is built for the future,” said Steven Tramonte, chief commercial officer. “As markets evolve, we are ready to expand, innovate and deliver the services our customers need to thrive.”
