ABB Upgrades BPCL’s 582-Mile Vadinar–Bina Oil Pipeline in India
ABB has modernized automation, monitoring and cybersecurity systems on BPCL’s 582-mile Vadinar–Bina crude oil pipeline in India, completing the upgrade without disrupting operations.
(P&GJ) — ABB India has completed a modernization of automation and monitoring systems on Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Vadinar–Bina Pipeline, a roughly 582-mile (937-kilometer) cross-country crude oil line supplying the Bina refinery, the company said Jan. 20.
The project upgraded control and cybersecurity systems across the pipeline while keeping the asset fully operational, with no downtime or shutdowns reported during execution. The Vadinar–Bina Pipeline supplies 7.80 million metric tons per year of crude oil to BPCL’s Bina refinery, making it a critical link in India’s fuel supply chain.
According to ABB, the scope included a full upgrade of the ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage SCADA system, replacement of 35 remote terminal units at pumping, pigging and sectionalizing valve stations, and installation of new SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina. Cybersecurity enhancements were also deployed, including network protection, system hardening and centralized monitoring.
“We are proud to have partnered with ABB on the modernization of the Vadinar-Bina pipeline, completed seamlessly without any shutdowns,” said Mr. Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar Bina Pipeline, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. “The project strengthened our cyber security and system resilience, greatly enhancing the reliability of the entire pipeline infrastructure. With failover capability and disaster recovery servers implemented at both Vadinar and Bina, we now have robust support to maintain uninterrupted operations even in challenging conditions.”
“The VBPL is an important asset for the nation’s energy supply when energy demand is only increasing,” said G. Balaji, senior vice president at ABB India’s Energy Industries division. “ABB executed the modernization of the pipeline without any operational disruption, ensuring continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations throughout the project. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering future-ready, resilient technology for India’s most critical energy infrastructure.”
ABB said it has previously provided automation solutions across approximately 66% of BPCL’s pipeline network.
