U.S. LNG Positioned to Fill Global Supply Gap Amid Qatar Outages

U.S. LNG is stepping in to replace disrupted Qatar supply, with new export capacity helping stabilize global gas markets. The shift highlights growing reliance on U.S. LNG to fill emerging supply gaps.

(Reuters) — U.S. LNG supply is expected to help offset disruptions from Qatar as force majeure on gas deliveries may extend beyond mid-June, according to Italian importer Edison.

The company said it replaced 10 cancelled cargoes from QatarEnergy with seven LNG shipments sourced from the United States, highlighting growing reliance on U.S. export capacity to stabilize global gas markets.

Qatar’s supply disruptions follow damage to export infrastructure during the Middle East conflict, which has reduced available LNG volumes and tightened market conditions.

Edison executives said new U.S. liquefaction capacity is playing a key role in filling the supply gap. Recent startup activity, including Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG facility and the Golden Pass project, is expected to support additional export volumes over the near term.

The shift underscores the increasing importance of U.S. LNG in global supply balancing, particularly as Europe and other importers seek alternatives to both Russian gas and disrupted Middle East shipments.

Despite tighter conditions, Edison said the market retains sufficient flexibility, with additional U.S. capacity expected to support supply over the next 18 months.
