Osaka Gas Completes LNG Bunkering Network with Ship-to-Ship Launch
Osaka Gas has begun ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations, completing its marine fuel supply network and expanding LNG fueling flexibility for vessels in Japan.
(P&GJ) — Osaka Gas has started ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering for marine vessels, expanding its fueling capabilities and strengthening LNG supply options in Japan, according to an April 21 announcement.
The first operation involved supplying LNG from the bunkering vessel SETO AZURE to a dual-fuel bulk carrier at JFE Steel’s facility in Hiroshima, marking the company’s entry into ship-to-ship fueling.
With the addition of ship-to-ship service, Osaka Gas now offers all three primary LNG bunkering methods—ship-to-ship, truck-to-ship and port-to-ship—allowing greater flexibility in how vessels are fueled.
The company said the expanded capability is designed to improve supply reliability and operational efficiency by enabling LNG delivery based on vessel location and port conditions.
The bunkering vessel, delivered earlier this month, will operate primarily in Osaka Bay and surrounding areas as part of the company’s growing LNG fueling network.
Osaka Gas said the development supports rising demand for LNG as a marine fuel, driven by efforts to reduce emissions in the shipping sector.
The company added that LNG infrastructure in Japan remains limited, making expanded bunkering capabilities key to supporting adoption.
