NNPC Completes River Niger Crossing on OB3 Gas Pipeline

NNPC has completed the River Niger crossing on the OB3 pipeline, a key milestone that unlocks up to 2 billion cubic feet per day of gas transport capacity across Nigeria.

(P&GJ) — Nigeria’s NNPC has completed the River Niger crossing on the 130-kilometer (about 81-mile) Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline, marking a key milestone in expanding the country’s gas transmission network, according to a company press release.

The crossing, installed roughly two kilometers (about 1.2 miles) beneath the riverbed using horizontal directional drilling, represents one of the most technically complex sections of the project and enables full integration of the pipeline.

Once fully operational, the OB3 pipeline is designed to transport up to 2 billion cubic feet per day of gas, linking eastern supply sources with western demand centers and strengthening national energy connectivity.

The project also connects with other major infrastructure, including the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline, extending gas delivery further into northern Nigeria.

NNPC said the milestone is expected to unlock more than 500 million cubic feet per day of incremental gas supply for the domestic market, supporting power generation, industrial demand and regional exports.

The OB3 pipeline is a central component of Nigeria’s strategy to expand gas utilization, improve supply reliability and strengthen its national energy network.
