Kazakhstan Weighs Russia-to-China Gas Pipeline Route

(P&GJ) — Kazakhstan is continuing discussions on a potential transit gas pipeline linking Russia to China through its territory, as officials assess route options and commercial viability.
The country’s Energy Ministry said it is reviewing possible gas transportation corridors, including the Russia-Kazakhstan-China route, and remains in contact with interested parties as talks progress.
A separate domestic project, the Ishim-Astana pipeline, is also under evaluation, with Kazakhstan and Russia studying technical and economic parameters and potential development terms.
The transit route through Kazakhstan faces uncertainty as Russia and China advance alternative infrastructure, including a proposed pipeline via Mongolia. Earlier plans envisioned a system capable of moving up to 45 billion cubic meters per year, with a portion allocated to domestic supply and the remainder exported to China.
Kazakhstan has also been working with Gazprom on broader gas infrastructure development, including agreements signed in recent years covering supply, transportation and processing. A northern pipeline project tied to those efforts is targeted for completion around 2030.
