Guinea LNG Project Advances with U.S. Support
Guinea’s LNG project is gaining traction with U.S. support as developers push forward on infrastructure aimed at powering mining and industrial growth across West Africa.
(P&GJ) — West Africa LNG Group said its proposed Guinea LNG project is advancing as the developer deepens engagement with U.S. officials and Guinean authorities, underscoring growing support for gas infrastructure tied to the country’s mining and industrial expansion.
The update came during the Powering Africa Summit in Washington, D.C., where company representatives and government officials highlighted progress on the project and broader alignment on energy security and supply chain development.
Guinea’s energy minister, Laye-Sékou Camara, reiterated the government’s focus on building out reliable energy systems to support rapid industrial growth, particularly in the country’s bauxite and alumina sectors.
“Guinea is committed to building a modern energy system that can support our industrial growth and fully unlock the value of our natural resources,” Camara said. “Partnerships such as the Guinea LNG project are central to delivering the reliable and scalable energy infrastructure required for the next phase of our economic development.”
The proposed LNG project, being developed by West Africa LNG Group in coordination with the Guinean government, is designed to supply flexible, gas-fired energy to industrial users. The project aims to reduce reliance on heavier fuels while supporting broader development of the country’s energy infrastructure.
Officials from the United States and Guinea met on the sidelines of the summit, including discussions with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Acting Assistant Secretary Tommy Joyce, along with development finance institutions and private sector partners.
Those discussions highlighted a shared focus on strengthening energy infrastructure alongside critical minerals supply chains, particularly as demand for resources tied to the energy transition grows.
“The United States is committed to working with partners like Guinea to advance energy infrastructure that supports responsible resource development and long-term economic growth,” Joyce said. “Projects like Guinea LNG demonstrate how energy and critical minerals can be developed together through mutually beneficial partnerships that strengthen supply chains while creating lasting value for both countries.”
West Africa LNG Group said the project is moving through key development milestones with backing from international partners and could play a central role in supporting Guinea’s next phase of industrial growth.
“The Guinea LNG project represents a foundational step in building the energy infrastructure required to support Guinea’s long-term industrial development,” said Patricia Moller, chairman of West Africa LNG Group.
The company said it continues to engage with U.S. government agencies, development finance institutions and private investors as it works toward final development and financing decisions.
