Gas Networks Ireland Tests Composite Pipeline for Hydrogen-Ready Future

Gas Networks Ireland is testing composite pipeline technology with Purapipe International to cut emissions and prepare the national gas network for hydrogen, with results expected in 2026.

(P&GJ) —  Gas Networks Ireland is piloting a patented composite pipeline technology developed by Purapipe International, part of efforts to prepare the country’s gas network for hydrogen and reduce emissions.

The technology will undergo off-grid testing at the utility’s Network Innovation Centre, with Murphy International carrying out the trials. The pilot is designed to evaluate pipeline safety, integrity, and performance under controlled conditions before any broader deployment.

Gas Networks Ireland said the pilot will help assess how composite pipelines could lower the carbon footprint of infrastructure and operate more efficiently than conventional materials, supporting Ireland’s policy goals for renewable gases and hydrogen readiness. Initial results are expected in late 2026.

“Gas Networks Ireland has a strong track record of innovation in how we develop and manage the national gas network. By working with international partners like Purapipe, we can explore new technologies that could potentially enhance the resilience of our network, reduce emissions and ensure that Ireland is ready to safely transport renewable gases such as hydrogen,” said Chief Operations Officer Bobby Gleeson.

Purapipe International CEO Jesper Steen added: “We are delighted to partner with Gas Networks Ireland on this important pilot. This project showcases the potential of our technology to deliver more efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructures.”

The project is part of Gas Networks Ireland’s broader innovation program, which includes biomethane connections and hydrogen blending trials aimed at supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy while maintaining energy security.
