RIE Signs Agreement for Gas Capacity on Enbridge’s Algonquin Pipeline
Rhode Island Energy signed an agreement with Enbridge’s Algonquin Gas Transmission to secure firm capacity through the AGT Enhancement project, expanding access to domestic gas and reducing reliance on LNG imports by 2029.
(P&GJ) — Rhode Island Energy (RIE) has signed an agreement with Algonquin Gas Transmission, LLC (AGT) to secure firm natural gas capacity through AGT’s upcoming Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement (AGT Enhancement) project.
The project, slated for service by winter 2029, will expand access to domestic natural gas supplies and reduce RIE’s dependence on imported liquefied natural gas. Under the deal, RIE plans to contract about 30% of the project’s capacity, adding new flexibility and resilience to the state’s gas network.
“As we look to address the issue of affordability in our state, we believe an ‘all of the above’ holistic approach to energy resources provides the most significant benefit to our customers,” said RIE President Greg Cornett. “Increasing the availability of supply for our existing natural gas customers, and those who wish to connect to our gas delivery system, is just one of the many ways we are working to meet growing demand, improve reliability and reduce costs.”
According to RIE, the AGT Enhancement will improve reliability across Rhode Island — including Aquidneck Island — without the need for major new pipeline construction. Instead, AGT plans targeted upgrades to its existing system.
The utility said the new capacity will strengthen its natural gas portfolio as it continues to balance affordability, reliability, and compliance with state energy policies.
