New Jersey RNG Facility Begins Operations, Delivering Renewable Gas to South Jersey Pipeline

OPAL Fuels, South Jersey Industries, and ACUA have launched New Jersey’s first RNG project connected to the South Jersey Gas pipeline, converting landfill gas into renewable natural gas and expanding clean energy access in the region.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (P&GJ) — OPAL Fuels, South Jersey Industries (SJI), and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) have started commercial operations at a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, marking a first for SJI’s utility subsidiary, South Jersey Gas.

The facility, located at ACUA’s solid waste landfill, captures landfill gas and converts it into pipeline-quality RNG. The project represents the first time RNG will be injected into the South Jersey Gas pipeline system, expanding the region’s access to lower-carbon fuel.

The site has a nameplate capacity of 2,500 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) of landfill gas and is expected to produce over 650,000 MMBtu annually, equivalent to about 4.6 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE).

“The launch of this facility marks an important milestone in OPAL Fuels’ mission of turning waste into clean, domestic energy,” said Adam Comora, Co-CEO of OPAL Fuels. “This project reduces emissions, improves local air quality, creates jobs, and strengthens American energy independence.”

SJI called the project a key step in its renewable energy expansion strategy. “This project underscores our commitment to innovation and continuing efforts in renewable energy solutions,” said Chet Benham, President of SJI Renewable Energy Ventures.

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority, which hosts the project, noted its role as New Jersey’s first public solid waste facility to support an RNG development. “Because of the shared environmental leadership among OPAL, SJI, and ACUA, landfill gas is now a renewable energy source for our community,” said ACUA President Matthew DeNafo.

The Egg Harbor project is the first of two collaborations between OPAL Fuels and SJI under their joint venture to develop, construct, and operate RNG facilities in New Jersey. The next project, the Burlington RNG Facility in Florence Township, is already under development.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Egg Harbor Township facility is planned for later this month.
