Glenfarne, Tokyo Gas Sign Deal Advancing Alaska LNG Exports

Glenfarne Alaska LNG has signed an agreement with Tokyo Gas for 1 MTPA of LNG, marking its fifth deal in seven months and strengthening the commercial momentum of the 20 MTPA Alaska LNG project.

(P&GJ) — Glenfarne Alaska LNG, LLC, and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. have signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the offtake of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Alaska LNG project, which is majority owned and developed by Glenfarne.

The agreement marks Glenfarne’s fifth commercial commitment in seven months, representing more than half of the project’s expected contracted volume. Tokyo Gas, one of Japan’s largest utilities, is recognized for its long-standing role in global LNG procurement.

“This agreement validates the strength of Alaska LNG’s commercial offering and the importance of Alaska LNG as a strategically positioned supplier of affordable, clean LNG for U.S. Pacific allies,” said Glenfarne CEO and founder Brendan Duval. “Tokyo Gas pioneered the LNG industry with their agreement to purchase LNG from Alaska fifty-five years ago and is one of the most respected voices in the industry. We welcome their participation in Alaska LNG.”

Glenfarne has signed preliminary offtake agreements totaling 11 MTPA with buyers across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, including JERA, POSCO, CPC, and PTT. The company expects to secure approximately 16 MTPA of capacity before reaching financial close for the 20 MTPA project.

Engineering firm Worley is completing final design and cost validation for the project’s 807-mile pipeline. Alaska LNG comprises a 42-inch pipeline to transport natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope, serving both domestic demand and export production.

The project is being developed in two phases: the first will deliver gas 765 miles from the North Slope to the Anchorage region, while the second will add the LNG terminal and related export infrastructure. The State of Alaska, through the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation, holds a 25% ownership stake.
