CSV Midstream Starts Up Alberta Gas Plant, First New Sour Gas Facility in 30 Years

CSV Midstream Solutions has launched its 150 million cubic feet per day Albright gas plant in Alberta—the province’s first new sour gas facility with sulfur recovery in more than 30 years—boosting Montney processing capacity and setting the stage for future projects at Gold Creek and Valhalla.

CALGARY, Alberta (P&GJ) — CSV Midstream Solutions (CSV) has started operations at its new 150 million cubic feet per day Albright gas plant in northern Alberta, marking the first greenfield sour gas facility with sulfur recovery built in the province in more than 30 years.

Located in the Montney shale region, the Albright plant represents a major milestone for CSV and signals renewed investment in Canada’s natural gas infrastructure. The facility uses advanced sulfur recovery technology configured for higher reliability, scalability, and lower energy intensity than legacy systems.

“The successful completion of the Albright plant marks an important achievement for CSV and provides an essential service to our producer partners,” said Chris Dutcher, vice president of corporate and business development. “With LNG Canada ramping up, combined with the high sulfur prices we have today, there is a growing need for projects that focus on natural gas processing and sulfur recovery.”

“This facility sets a new benchmark in sulfur recovery efficiency, positioning us to replicate this solution at our Gold Creek development and other locations under consideration,” Dutcher added.

CSV said the technology used at Albright will serve as a model for its 150 million cubic feet per day Gold Creek plant, which received regulatory approval last year, and the approved Valhalla 2 project adjacent to its existing Valhalla facility. The Valhalla 2 plant will apply a similar process that uses injection instead of sulfur recovery for acid-gas handling.

“With gas processing services available at Albright, Gold Creek, and Valhalla we are in a strong position to meet the area’s growing demand for critical sour gas processing services,” said Daniel Clarke, CSV CEO.

CSV added that optimization work at Albright could enable additional capacity and that it continues to evaluate both greenfield and brownfield expansion opportunities across Alberta.
