New Generation Optical Gas Imaging Camera System Ensures Safety

Sponsored by Konica Minolta

Konica Minolta is pleased to introduce the results of a recent collaboration and study conducted mutually with oil & gas operators utilizing our optical gas imaging (OGI) camera system.  The benefits and importance of clear images available to the inspectors and operations team are determined to ensure safety.

Small Leak Detection

Currently, inspectors have a challenging task at hand, effectively inspecting hot compressor machines with standard OGI. At an operator's compressor station, an inspector missed a small leak which grew larger in just three weeks, as shown on the right. If you schedule inspection under a quarterly regulatory schedule, you run the risk of those leaks becoming a significant hazard before you can identify them.

Heat Noise Reduction

The GMP01 has a powerful and unique "heat noise" reduction algorithm, especially useful in hot background situations such as compressor stations. When a leak exists near such high heated equipment, detecting a large leak with the High Sensitivity Mode (HSM) can still be challenging.  The GMP01 has a unique Gas Enhanced Mode, which can easily highlight a gas leak when the HSM is unable to.

The camera's features allow your inspector the highest level of gas leak inspection capability, such as earlier detection of small leaks from a distance.

Heat Distribution

Now, unexpected issues and failures are not just limited to gas leaks. The OGI camera system uses Infrared Sensing Technology, and then detects the heat distribution of the target equipment during the leak inspection. Notice the difference in the heat distribution among the figure on the right. It shows an asymmetry on Cy1 of Compressor B. On the other hand, each cylinder's equipment temperature is usually monitored at a site control room remotely, as shown at the bottom of the figure. The site superintendent mentioned that the thermal asymmetry indicates something wrong inside the cylinder and may cause a future failure. This example signifies the importance of the thermal image over simple temperature sensors, which may not show "the whole picture."

Product introduction

Our camera, also known by its model name GMP01 is controlled by the included tablet, from which all of the displays are viewable, and the inspections can be played back on. The GMP01 has been tested by a third party and deemed as meeting the requirements of the NSPS OOOOa.  And it is certified as an approved instrument monitoring method (AIMM) by the CDPHE, Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, as well. It is also worth mentioning that when using our camera systems tablet, multiple image modes are simultaneously available to the inspector, literally “at their fingertips”.
