Sabal Trail Transmission Project Receives FERC Certificate
Sabal Trail Transmission, a joint venture of Spectra Energy Partners, NextEra Energy, and Duke Energy, received a certificate of public convenience and necessity from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to construct and operate the Sabal Trail interstate natural gas pipeline project.
The approval authorizes Sabal Trail, subject to certain conditions, to proceed with final preparations to start construction in the coming months to meet a May 1, 2017, in-service date.
Once complete, the 516-mile pipeline would have the capacity to deliver 1.1 Bcf/d to the Southeast, including firm transportation services to Florida Power & Light Co. and Duke Energy of Florida.
“Sabal Trail will provide a critically needed source of natural gas to the Southeast to meet the growing demand for natural gas-fired generation,” said Bill Yardley, president of Sabal Trail Management, LLC and president of U.S. Transmission and Storage, Spectra Energy.
As to construction, 481 miles of 36-inch mainline will originate in Tallapoosa County, AL and end at an interconnection with Florida Southeast Connection’s proposed project in Osceola County, FL.
In Florida, 13 miles of 36-inch pipeline will be built that extends from a proposed compressor station in Osceola County to Florida Gas Transmission’s existing natural gas pipeline in Orange County. Also, 21 miles of 24-inch pipeline is to be constructed in Marion and Citrus Counties to a new electric generation plant proposed by Duke Energy Florida.
Plans call for five compressor stations to be constructed in Tallapoosa County, Dougherty County, GA, and Suwannee, Marion, and Osceola counties in Florida; plus six new meter stations.
