EcoLog, Kawasaki Partner on European Liquid Hydrogen Supply Chain

EcoLog and Kawasaki Heavy Industries are partnering to develop liquefied hydrogen transportation and terminal infrastructure aimed at supporting Europe’s growing hydrogen supply chain.

(P&GJ) — EcoLog and Kawasaki Heavy Industries have formed a strategic partnership focused on developing liquefied hydrogen transportation and terminal infrastructure in Europe, with initial efforts centered on the port of Amsterdam.

The agreement covers the midstream portion of the liquid hydrogen supply chain, including marine transportation, import terminals and ship-to-shore transfer systems. The companies said the planned network is intended to support hydrogen imports into Europe from potential supply regions including Oman, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Brazil.

Kawasaki, which developed one of the world’s first liquefied hydrogen carriers, will provide engineering and operational support tied to shipping and terminal infrastructure. EcoLog, which has experience in LNG transportation and cryogenic cargo operations, is expected to oversee carrier and terminal operations within the planned network.

The companies said the partnership is aimed at improving long-term hydrogen supply reliability while supporting industrial demand growth in Europe. Potential end uses include heavy transport, power-intensive digital infrastructure and other industrial applications.

EcoLog CEO Ellen Ruhotas said liquid hydrogen is gaining momentum as both an energy source and transportation fuel, while Kawasaki Managing Executive Officer Yoshimoto Matsuda said the partnership is intended to strengthen energy security through expanded hydrogen infrastructure development.
