(P&GJ) — A gas pipeline explosion in São Paulo left one person dead and damaged dozens of nearby structures after construction activity reportedly struck underground gas infrastructure, according to reporting from BNO News.
The blast occurred Monday afternoon in the Jaguaré district of western São Paulo, triggering a large emergency response and causing significant structural damage in the surrounding area. Local civil defense officials said at least 35 properties were affected by the explosion.
Firefighters recovered the body of a 45-year-old man from debris at the scene, while three other people were injured and transported for medical treatment.
Authorities said the incident was linked to construction work involving São Paulo sanitation company Sabesp, which reportedly struck a gas pipeline during excavation activities. According to BNO News, work was halted immediately after the gas line was hit and utility crews were called to respond.
Sabesp said the cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the companies involved and local authorities.
Emergency responders later confirmed the gas leak had been shut off and said there was no ongoing risk of another explosion. Search teams and rescue dogs were deployed to inspect rubble and determine whether additional victims remained trapped beneath collapsed structures.
