GASCADE Advances 9-Mile HYLU Hydrogen Pipeline in Southwest Germany

GASCADE has launched preparatory work for its 15-kilometer (9-mile) HYLU hydrogen pipeline linking Lampertheim and Ludwigshafen as part of Germany’s hydrogen core grid buildout.

(P&GJ) — GASCADE Gastransport has begun preparatory work for a planned 15-kilometer (9-mile) hydrogen pipeline linking Lampertheim and Ludwigshafen am Rhein in southwest Germany.

The HYLU pipeline is designed to transport hydrogen received in Lampertheim from the MIDAL transmission pipeline, which is being converted for hydrogen service, and deliver it to industrial customers in Ludwigshafen. The project also includes construction of a hydrogen pressure regulating and measuring station (WDRM) in Lampertheim.

The pipeline is part of Germany’s hydrogen core grid and is scheduled for completion in 2029.

To maintain regional natural gas supply during the transition, GASCADE also plans to build a new gas pressure regulating and metering station (GDRM) in Lampertheim. That facility is expected to enter service in 2028 and will integrate into the existing natural gas network.

As part of the planning approval process in the states of Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, mapping, surveying, building site investigations and explosive ordnance surveys will be conducted along the proposed pipeline corridor and at station sites.

The main mapping phase is expected to run from March through July 2026. According to the company, the work will be carried out primarily during daytime hours and on publicly accessible land.

GASCADE said the preparatory work does not constitute a final investment decision but is intended to support the formal permitting process.

Once operational, the HYLU connection would provide large-scale access to Germany’s hydrogen backbone network for industrial users in the region, including chemical, power generation, paper and mechanical engineering facilities.
