Stockholm Pipeline Doubles Biogas Capacity in Huddinge

A new gas pipeline in Stockholm has connected two biogas plants, more than doubling liquefied biogas capacity and strengthening regional energy supply.

(P&GJ) — A newly completed gas pipeline in Stockholm has connected two biogas facilities, more than doubling liquefied biogas production capacity and expanding supply across the regional gas network.

The pipeline links St1 Biokraft’s Henriksdal and Gladö Kvarn plants through Stockholm’s gas system, enabling increased production of liquefied biogas (LBG) in Huddinge.

The Gladö Kvarn facility produces about 100 GWh of biogas annually and includes upgrading units capable of producing both compressed and liquefied biogas. While the liquefaction unit was completed in 2023, the lack of a grid connection had limited its output. The new pipeline allows additional volumes from Henriksdal to be processed, increasing overall capacity.

Construction of the pipeline took approximately two years and was supported in part by funding from Sweden’s Klimatklivet program.

St1 Biokraft CEO Miika Johansson said the connection marks a key step in expanding supply of low-carbon fuels.

“This connection allows us to increase liquefied biogas supply and strengthen regional energy security,” Johansson said.

Jesper Karpsen, CEO of Gasnätet Stockholm, said the project supports both energy diversification and system resilience.

“The pipeline expands the region’s energy mix and reduces reliance on a single source,” Karpsen said.

Liquefied biogas is used as a lower-emission fuel in heavy transport, shipping and industrial applications, and is produced from local waste streams, including food waste and wastewater.
