Duke Energy Closes Piedmont Acquisition, Adds 1 Million Gas Customers Duke Energy closed its acquisition of Piedmont Natural Gas with Piedmont, retaining its name and operating as a business unit of Duke. Both companies are headquartered in Charlotte, NC. The acquisition adds Piedmont’s 1 million natural gas customers to Duke Energy’s existing customer base of 525,000 natural gas customers and 7.4 million electric customers. The North Carolina Utilities Commission on Sept. 30 approved the acquisition – the final regulatory ruling needed to complete the transaction. Petrobras to Sell 90% of Gas Pipeline Unit to Brookfield-Led Consortium Brazilian state-run oil company Petrobras will sell a 90% stake of its natural-gas pipeline unit to a consortium led by Brookfield Asset Management Inc. for $5.2 billion as part of its debt-reduction plan. Petrobras will keep a 10% stake in the unit, Nova Transportadora do Sudeste SA, or NTS. Canada-based Brookfield said the consortium also includes CIC Capital Corporation, GIC Private Limited and others. FAA Releases Application for Small Drone Waivers The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released the form and instructions on how to apply for a waiver from certain requirements included in the “Operation and Certification of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems” final rule. The final rule went into effect Aug. 29, and permits the use, with certain limitations, of small unmanned aircraft systems (small drones) for non-hobby and non-recreational purposes. Houston Pipeliners Award Scholarships, Pick Officers The Houston Pipeliners Association handed out over $550,000 to 80-plus soon-to-be college students through its scholarship program as members wrapped up the year’s business at the June meeting. The students selected were each related to a current member of the association who is in good standing. PDVSA’s Future Clouded by Venezuelan Crisis National oil company PDVSA may badly need money and could be in such a precarious condition that it causes the demise of the wider Venezuelan oil sector, according to an article in Oilprice.com. OTC Attendance Shows Huge Dropoff Houston’s Offshore Technology Conference drew only 68,000 attendees last month, down 37% from 2014 when the 108,000 attendees set a record. Last year’s event attracted 94,700 attendees. The exhibition floor was still the third-largest in the event’s 48-year history, at 672,300 square feet, including outdoor exhibits, trailing 2015 and 2014. Over 2,600 companies exhibited including 300 new exhibitors. Exhibitors came from 47 countries, and international companies comprised 51% of exhibitors.
