‘New World Order’ Re-shaping Natural Gas Storage

November 2016, Vol. 243, No. 11

As the International Energy Agency (IEA) observed in June, dramatic changes are underway in the world’s natural gas trade. Thanks to shifting demand patterns, suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from producing countries such as the U.S. and Australia increasingly will need to look for new homes for LNG beyond traditional major destinations such as Japan and South Korea, IEA noted. The expansion of the global LNG trade, coupled with growing demand for dispatchable electricity generation, translates into increased opportunities for natural gas storage operators, according to HSB Solomon Associates LLC. The Dallas-based consulting firm...

The Downstream Frontline for Integrity Management

June 2016, Vol. 243, No. 6

Recent news headlines around gas storage incidents highlight the fact that it is not only oil and gas-producing wells that need continuous real-time integrity monitoring to avoid catastrophic leaks. According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) most recent forecasts, we can expect a sustained period of growth in natural gas consumption over the next few years. The IEA predicts that by 2040, gas will be second only to oil as the largest source of energy worldwide, knocking coal into third place. At that point, gas will account for 24% of the global energy mix. If...
