Oil Pipeline Spill Cleanup Underway in Oklahoma City

YUKON, Okla. (AP) — A spokesman for the Environmental Protection Agency says cleanup is underway in suburban Oklahoma City where about 2,000 barrels of oil spilled from a ruptured pipeline. EPA on-scene coordinator Mike McAteer said Tuesday that workers are skimming oil off the surface of a 7-acre pond near a residential neighborhood outside Yukon, about 17 miles (27 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City. McAteer says oil bubbled into the pond early Sunday from a pipeline operated by Centurion Pipeline L.P. He says crews will tunnel beneath the pond to inspect the ruptured pipeline and […]

Pipeline Leaks Oil into Pond Near Central Oklahoma Neighborhood

YUKON, Okla. (AP) – Authorities say oil from a broken pipeline has spilled into a pond near a central Oklahoma neighborhood. Officials say oil began flowing into the pond about 3:35 a.m. Sunday near a neighborhood in Yukon, Oklahoma, located about 17 miles (27 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City. Oil was bubbling up from under the water in a 10-acre pond after being released from a broken 16-inch pipeline. Officials say a heavy amount of oil was observed on the surface of the pond before pipeline workers shut off the flow of oil. Fire officials in […]

TransCanada’s Keystone Pipeline Spill Cleanup on Schedule

AMHERST, S.D. (AP) — TransCanada Corp. says cleanup of a massive on-shore oil spill from Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota is halfway finished. Last November, the pipeline leaked 210,000 gallons of crude oil onto agricultural land in Marshall County, one of the largest on-shore oil spills in the U.S. since 2010. TransCanada spokeswoman Robynn Tysver told Aberdeen American News that the work has transitioned from excavation of the Amherst site to its remediation to original condition. “All of the excavation work at the site has been completed, and most of the impacted soil has been […]

2 People Injured When Natural Gas Blast Rips Through Iowa House

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Two people have been injured by a natural gas explosion at their home in central Iowa. The Messenger reports that the four residents had just been told to leave the Fort Dodge house Wednesday afternoon when the blast erupted. Two of the residents were unharmed. The two others were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter blamed a natural gas leak that other officials say may have started when a city public works crew stuck a gas line in front of the house while […]

Britain’s Most Important Oil Pipeline Down Again

The Forties pipeline had to be shut down for the second time in two months on Wednesday, leaving buyers worried about the infrastructure behind Britain’s oldest and most important oil route, according to a new report by Reuters. Operator Ineos said the facility should begin transporting fuels at its normal rate of 450,000 barrels per day overnight. The company acquired the Forties network from British Petroleum two months ago for  $125 million. Last December, a crack caused Forties to shut down for three weeks, prompting Ineos to call a force majeure on its export contracts. Oil […]

Fine Imposed for Pipeline Spill on North Dakota Reservation

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Crestwood Equity Partners has paid a $49,000 fine to the Environmental Protection Agency for a pipeline leak in 2014 that spilled 1 million gallons of produced water on the Fort Berthold Reservation in northwestern North Dakota and contaminated Lake Sakakawea. The EPA also ordered Crestwood to provide the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation with at least $173,000 in spill-response equipment, the Bismarck Tribune reported Saturday. Cleanup efforts are ongoing at the site near Mandaree. Crestwood is following an EPA-approved remediation plan that requires the company to install five groundwater monitoring wells. […]

Gas Leak Repaired in Central London After Evacuation

LONDON (AP) — British officials say a leaky gas pipe has been repaired after shutting down parts of central London. Officials say normal traffic and train service has resumed in the Strand area after around 1,450 people had been evacuated as a precaution. The leak was reported at around 2 a.m. Tuesday (0200 GMT; 9 p.m. EST Monday), causing a nightclub and nearby hotel to be cleared of partygoers and guests. The fire department said the disruption was caused by “high levels of natural gas coming off of a ruptured gas main.” It is the […]

Utility: Weight of Fill Material Caused Gas Pipeline Fire

ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan utility says the weight of 21 feet of fill material was responsible for a November gas line rupture and massive fire in Oakland County’s Orion Township. Jackson-based Consumers Energy says Monday in a statement that the weight of the material “stressed the pipeline and caused it to sag due to the compressibility of the supporting organic soil layer.” The utility says the material was added by a third party. The fire started Nov. 20 on vacant land about 30 miles north of Detroit. The blaze eventually burned itself […]

Local fire services put out the fires at 8:00 in the morning. No loss of life has been reported […]

Forties Pipeline To Remain Shut For Up To Three More Weeks

The Forties Pipeline that was shut down last week for repair of a hairline crack will remain shut for two to four weeks from December 11, the operator of the pipeline responsible for carrying 40 percent of the UK’s North Sea crude oil production, Ineos, said on Tuesday, adding that it was awaiting custom parts to repair the crack. “Repairs are progressing well and a number of options are currently being developed. The custom parts necessary for some of these options have now been fabricated and are being delivered to the site over the coming […]

Gas Line Explosion Raises Concerns About Old Michigan Pipes

ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Environmental advocates say Michigan’s aging gas pipelines have a heightened risk of corrosion or other material failure that could cause a fire or explosion. The concerns follow last month’s gas explosion in Orion Township, about 30 miles north of Detroit, The Detroit News reported. The fire burned for about two hours and left a 20-foot-deep crater near the pipeline. The pipeline involved in the blast is 65 years old. A sudden loss of pressure was recorded along the line shortly before the explosion, utility officials said. Consumers Energy is waiting […]
