Keystone Pipeline Leaks 210K Gallons of Oil in South Dakota

AMHERST, S.D. (AP) — TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone pipeline leaked an estimated 210,000 gallons of oil in northeastern South Dakota, the company and state regulators reported Thursday. Crews shut down the pipeline Thursday morning and activated emergency response procedures after a drop in pressure was detected resulting from the leak south of a pump station in Marshall County, TransCanada said in a statement. The cause was being investigated. Officials don’t believe the leak affected any surface water bodies or threatened any drinking water systems, said Brian Walsh, an environmental scientist manager at the South Dakota Department […]

North Dakota Regulators Blame Pipeline Spill on Human Error

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State regulators say human error caused a pipeline spill that leaked more than 11,000 gallons (42,000 liters) of oilfield wastewater in western North Dakota. The Bismarck Tribune reports that the spill in Dunn County on Sunday was reported by Crestwood Midstream. Department of Mineral Resources spokeswoman Alison Ritter says crews forgot to close a valve on the pipeline, which caused the produced water spill. Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil that can contain drilling chemicals. Regulators say the spill was contained within a pipeline trench and most of […]

Shell: Four Oil Platforms Shut In Gulf Of Mexico After Fire

Four oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico have been shut after a fire broke out at Shell-operated Enchilada oil platform last week, Shell said on Tuesday. “Production is shut in at the Shell-operated Enchilada and Salsa platforms, as well as the associated Hess-operated Conger field,” said Shell which has a 37.5-percent stake in the field. “In addition, Shell safely shut in all production operations at its Auger platform due to downstream constraints caused by this incident,” the Anglo-Dutch oil major said, as quoted by Reuters. Last Wednesday, Shell said that overnight on November 8, […]

Iran Denies Involvement In Bahrain Oil Pipeline Blast

Tehran has denied that it had anything to do with the blow-up of Bahrain’s biggest oil pipeline that carries crude from Saudi Arabia. In a statement carried by media, the spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said “It seems the only thing that Bahraini officials have learned to do after any incident in the island is pinning the blame on Iran. “They should know that the era of making such absurd and false statements and the time of playing such childish blame-games has come to an end.” The blast occurred late on Friday night near a […]

Bahrain Says Militants Attacked Oil Pipeline

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An explosion ripped through a pipeline belonging to Bahrain’s state-run oil company and sent flames shooting up into the night sky, with government officials on Saturday blaming the blast on an attack by militants guided by Iran. No one was injured in the explosion late Friday night near the Shiite village of Buri and no militant group immediately claimed the blast. However, it potentially opens a new front in the low-level insurgency plaguing Bahrain since its 2011 Arab Spring protests. The explosion damaged cars and nearby buildings, forcing firefighters […]

Natural Gas Leak Blamed for Ohio Home Explosion

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Investigators say a natural gas leak contributed to the home explosion in Ohio that killed a 54-year-old woman, but the cause of the leak is still unknown. In a statement Wednesday, Columbia Gas says they are confident their main lines and service lines did not contribute to the explosion. Emergency responders received several calls from neighbors around 4 a.m. Monday after the explosion in southeastern Columbus. Shelly Williams was pulled from the debris and her longtime boyfriend, 59-year-old Stewart Bell, was thrown from the home. Williams later died from her injuries. […]

Enbridge Says It Knew About Line 5 Damage Years Ago

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — The company that operates twin oil pipelines in a Great Lakes waterway says it knew three years ago that protective coating had been damaged but didn’t inform regulatory agencies. Enbridge Inc. says four gaps were opened in enamel coating on one section of Line 5 in Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac as a support anchor was being installed in 2014. The coating gap is one of several that have exposed bare metal on parts of the pipelines. Company spokesman Ryan Duffy says the gaps are being repaired and haven’t compromised the […]

Gas Pipeline Explosion Kills Man Doing Maintenance Work

NAVARRE, Ohio (AP) — A sheriff’s office says a natural gas pipeline explosion in Ohio killed a man doing maintenance work. The explosion Monday killed a Columbia Gas Transmission pipeline worker and caused a large gas leak just south of Canton that forced authorities to evacuate the neighborhood. The Stark County Sheriff’s office identified the victim as 60-year-old Wesley Johnson, of Wooster. The Repository in Canton reports that investigators believe a cap on the end of a pipeline gave way, but the cause isn’t known. Gas odors drifted more than four miles away after the […]

More Oil than Initially Believed Spilled off Louisiana Coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Coast Guard says the amount of oil discharged into the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana’s coast last weekend is substantially higher than initial estimates. The Coast Guard says multiple flights over the area have detected no recoverable oil. Skimming vessels from Clean Gulf Associates and Marine Spill Response Corporation remain on standby. The Deepwater Horizon spill leaked more than 3 million barrels into the Gulf in 2010. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement says oil spewed out of an underwater fractured pipe Saturday in the Gulf of Mexico about […]

Washington Neighborhood Evacuated after Mudslide Hits Gas Line

EDMONDS, Wash. (AP) — A neighborhood in a Seattle suburb was evacuated after a mudslide breached a natural gas line. KOMO-TV reports that emergency officials responded to the scene at about 5:40 a.m. Thursday in the Snohomish County city of Edmonds after receiving reports of a gas leak. About 30 homes in the area were evacuated while crews assessed the danger and worked to shut off the gas leak. The gas was shut off about an hour later. One home was hit by the mudslide. The house was occupied at the time, but everyone got […]

Oil Spills Into Gulf of Mexico After Underwater Pipeline Bursts

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to an oil spill off the coast of Louisiana. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said in a news release Friday that oil spewed out of an underwater fractured pipe in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Venice, Louisiana. The offshore oil and gas operator, LLOG Exploration Offshore, says between 7,950 and 9,350 barrels of oil were released before the spill was halted. There were no reports of injuries. The Coast Guard said it was flying over the area […]

Gas Leaking from Kansas Wells Amid Dispute over Who Must Fix

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Natural gas is leaking through unplugged abandoned wells that have penetrated a massive underground storage field in Kansas, creating a public safety hazard amid a dispute over who is responsible for fixing the problem, regulatory filings show. Northern Natural Gas Co., which owns the underground storage facility, wants the Kansas Corporation Commission, which regulates oil and gas drilling in the state, to force well owners to plug abandoned wells. But the commission said in a filing last month that Northern Natural is responsible for making sure its natural gas isn’t escaping […]
