GAIL Nears Completion of 2,054-Mile Urja Ganga Pipeline Project
(P&GJ) — GAIL (India) Limited has completed over 97.6% of the Jagdishpur–Haldia–Bokaro–Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL), also known as the “Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga” project. The massive natural gas infrastructure spans 3,306 kilometers (approximately 2,054 miles), linking the eastern and northeastern regions of India.
As of now, 3,227 kilometers of pipeline have been laid, with commercial operations already underway across 3,119 kilometers—around 96.6% of the pipeline. Key operational segments include the Phulpur–Dobhi–Bokaro–Durgapur, Bokaro–Angul–Dhamra, and Dobhi–Barauni–Guwahati sections.
The pipeline is currently transporting 12.26 million standard cubic meters per day (MMscm/d) of natural gas. Beneficiaries include four fertilizer plants, two major refineries (Barauni and Paradip), multiple industrial users, and 32 City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks in cities like Varanasi, Patna, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Kolkata.

In the Durgapur–Haldia section (294 km), 132 km up to Kolkata has already been commissioned. Of the remaining 162 km to Haldia, 103 km of pipeline has been laid. For the Dhamra–Haldia section, with an authorized length of 240 km, 198 km have been completed. Due to limited availability of Right of Use (RoU), the completion timeline for both these sections has been extended from March 2025 to December 2025.
Upon full completion, the pipeline will enable GAIL to transport natural gas to the Haldia refinery, CGD networks in Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, and other industrial consumers along the route.
