TC Energy, Hanwha Power Systems Partner on sCO2 Power Generation Project
TC Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Power Systems to develop a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) waste heat recovery (WHR) project at one of TC Energy’s natural gas compressor stations in West Virginia.
The project aims to install an sCO2 power generation system that will capture unused waste heat from a gas turbine compressor, offering a carbon-free, renewable power generation solution.
Hanwha Power Systems sees the project as a key step in commercializing sCO2 power generation in the North American pipeline market, and a major milestone toward large-scale deployment in the industry. "This MOU with TC Energy brings us one step closer to the successful commercialization of sCO2 power generation systems," said Justin (Koo Yung) Lee, CEO of Hanwha Power Systems. "We will continue to contribute to carbon reduction in the oil and gas market by successfully expanding the application of sCO2 power generation systems across a wide range of compressor stations."
Hanwha Power Systems, a leader in industrial compressors and clean power solutions, is expanding its portfolio to include sCO2 and hydrogen/ammonia gas turbine technologies, aiming to play a central role in the transition to a carbon-neutral energy sector.
The sCO2 power generation system uses supercritical CO2 as a fluid in a closed-loop system, providing an efficient, compact, and water-free solution that harnesses waste heat without burning additional fossil fuels.
