Xcel Energy Assessing Hydrogen Blending for Its US Gas Pipelines
(P&GJ) — Xcel Energy has contracted for a study of the feasibility of injecting and blending hydrogen into its 36,000 miles (57,936 km) of distribution and 2,200 miles (3,540 km) of transmission pipelines.
Worley, alongside its consulting business, Advisian, has been chosen to undertake the detailed assessment, which will evaluate what percentage of injected hydrogen the system can accommodate, and what upgrades are necessary to optimize the blended quantity.
The injection and blending of hydrogen into the natural gas system will help Xcel Energy meet its low-carbon objectives, the company said.
“The potential that hydrogen has to support the energy transition will help Xcel Energy achieve its clean energy goals, and we are pleased to be involved in their journey,” said Oliver Morgan, global vice president of Midstream at Worley.
The project will entail reviewing all assets, including compression stations, meters and facilities. The study will assess each system, area and location to evaluate their maximum allowable hydrogen blending capability.
The results will contribute to the recommendations developed by Worley to identify what the current system can accommodate, and where upgrades are needed to enhance the system and increase the blend percentages.
Worley, headquartered in Australia, expects the assessment to be completed in July. Xcel serves 2.1 million customers.
