Harsco/Hammco Ships 100,000th ASME-Certified Cooler Section

Tulsa, OK-based Harsco Industrial Air-X-Changers/Hammco (HAXC/Hammco), a producer of cooling systems for natural gas compression and processing, oil refining and other applications, has reached a major milestone in shipping its 100,000th ASME-certified cooler section.

The cooling section is a core component of an HAXC Model 156 EH cooler, a vertical-discharge, forced-draft cooler combining engine and compressor cooling in a single, compact unit. The cooler shipped April 21 to be deployed in the Permian Basin of West Texas in a gas compression package manufactured by Exterran Corp. for the gas compression services firm Archrock. The package includes a Caterpillar engine and an Ariel compressor.

The section is certified as meeting the internationally recognized standards of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The BPVC is the largest and oldest ASME standard, used in over 100 countries, detailing strict rules for the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels.

A core component of any air-cooled heat exchanger used for cooling natural gas in the compression process, the cooling section comprises a precision-engineered matrix of tubes through which hot compressed gas flows. The gas is cooled by air forced or drawn across the section by a fan.

“We received our first ASME Certificate of Authorization in 1957, and our first ASME-certified unit shipped in 1958,” said HAXC/Hammco Vice President and General Manager Eric Clower. “In 2012, we shipped our 75,000th cooler. Now, just five years later, we’ve reached a major new milestone with the delivery of our 100,000th ASME-certified cooling section. And that production output doesn’t include the thousands of cooler sections and other components we’ve manufactured that didn’t require ASME certification.”

Broadened capabilities as well as expanded and improved new facilities have played key roles in boosting productivity over the last several years, Clower said. Hammco, a leader in cooling solutions for oil refineries as well as natural gas processing, was acquired by Harsco in 2014 and operates under Harsco Industrial Air-X-Changers management.

“The next year,” Clower added, “we consolidated operations in a 525,000-square-foot, single-campus facility designed to maximize productivity.”

Harsco Industrial Air-X-Changers/Hammco has been a leading manufacturer of air-cooled heat exchangers used in gas compression and other industries since 1954.
