Pipeline Suspension Bridges Topic At Pipeliners Meeting
Parsons project manager Seth Condell, P.E. discussed the intricacies involved in pipeline suspension bridges at a recent meeting of The Pipeliners Association of Houston.
After detailing the engineering and construction firm’s history – dating back to David Steinman and John Roebling – and about noteworthy Parsons projects in the transportation and pipeline industries, the engineer explained the elements of suspension bridges, specifically pipeline suspension bridges.
Condell recalled a project Parsons handled for Williams involving replacement of the main cables of two suspended aerial crossings carrying a natural gas pipeline across the Colorado and Brazos rivers in Texas. He explained the process of inspecting the main cables supporting these pipelines for degradation, particularly that resulting from concealed corrosion. He described the methods employed to replace the main cable, which restored the integrity of the bridge without taking the pipeline out of service.
Condell detailed the fabrication and intricacies involving wire rope and wire rope selection. He explained that the integrity of the structure supporting a pipeline aerial crossing is as vital as the integrity of the pipe itself.
