Turkemenistan-China Pipeline Remains On Track

Turkmenistan will complete the construction of its 188-km segment of the Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline by year’s end.

The pipeline will transport gas from eastern Turkmen fields and traverse Uzbek and Kazakh territory before reaching Xinjiang in eastern China. More than 1,200 km of the 7,000-km pipeline has already been laid in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The pipeline is expected to be fully operational by 2011.

The Turkemenistan-China pipeline’s initial capacity of 30 Bcm/a of gas pledged to China for 30 years, has been increased to 40 Bcm/a. The $US9.5 billion pipeline may also be extended to Japan.
