Ditch Witch, Utilicor Technologies Partner Up

October 2017, Vol. 244, No. 10

Public works managers across the nation have welcomed the use of keyhole coring: a less-costly, safer and less-disruptive approach to underground roadway and sidewalk utility repairs than traditional, large excavation techniques. Last month Ditch Witch®, a Charles Machine Works Company, announced its partnership with Utilicor Technologies, Inc. to bring the benefits of advanced keyhole technology and reinstatement to contractors, municipalities and utilities globally. Utility contractors need not bring heavy and physically demanding equipment such as jackhammers and backhoes for every utility maintenance project that requires asphalt or concrete repairs. Instead, they can operate a nimble, […]

Midstream Company Solves Flow Measurement Issues

October 2017, Vol. 244, No. 10

When Mike Heckl was a director of operations for Crestwood Midstream, the company established itself in the West Virginia Appalachian Basin by purchasing an area of development from a major upstream firm with a large acreage in the Ohio and West Virginia Marcellus/Utica Shale fields. They had already installed about 45 miles of pipe at this location with several dozen well pads flowing natural gas. They were not a midstream company, so Crestwood purchased the right to transport the gas for that particular area. Limited Measurement Available The upstream company had built this pipeline knowing...

Verifying Worker Training Onsite to Boost Safety

October 2017, Vol. 244, No. 10

Pipeline and energy companies are safety-conscious for good reason. Fewer accidents mean fewer delays, higher worker morale, lower insurance costs and avoidance of OSHA fines. Ensuring that workers do only jobs they’re trained for is one of the most critical steps in a safety program. An untrained worker who botches a job may injure himself and others, damage expensive equipment, cause fires and release hazardous materials. But in the rush to get things done, proper vetting can get overlooked. How can supervisors in the field know for sure about whether a particular worker is qualified […]

New Tools Can Cut Station Drying Times in Half

September 2017, Vol. 244, No. 9

Sugar Land, TX-based Pipeline Drying International, LLC, said it has developed new proprietary tools and techniques that, when used in combination with its patented Mobil Drying Units (MDU), can dry compressor stations, meter stations and some vessels faster than anyone else in the industry. The company is offering new proprietary tools that can remove standing water from most station piping. In general, pipeline drying, as well as the drying of compressor stations, meter stations and most vessels, is all done in the same manner. One of the fastest and most cost-effective methods is to run...

Excavators Look to Doosan for Challenging TAP Project

September 2017, Vol. 244, No. 9

A year into the project, 52 new Doosan excavators are working on a section of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), involving the construction of about 225 miles (360 km) of pipeline in Greece. In March 2016, a new company formed by Bonatti S.p.A. and J&P-Avax Group was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EP&C) contract for this section of the TAP Project. Following a competitive analysis of eight leading excavator manufacturers, Bonatti-J&P Avax chose Doosan equipment to handle the 48-inch pipes. The construction work required in the TAP project presented many challenges, leading up to the...

DNV GL Updates RP for Free-Spanning Pipelines

August 2017, Vol. 244, No. 8

Offshore pipeline spans, due to uneven seabed or seabed erosion processes, can require huge and costly seabed interventions. The DNV GL recommended practice (RP) on free-spanning pipelines has been widely applied in industry to solve the problems related to free spans in pipeline design and operation. The RP has now been updated with project and research experience from the last decade on free-span dynamic response, particularly on structural modeling. DNVGL-RP-F105 enables significant costs savings, both in the newbuilding and operational phase. The scope of the RP is to provide rational design criteria and guidance for...

Identifying Girth Weld Cracking Threats in CRA Cladded Pipes

August 2017, Vol. 244, No. 8

In 2013, a new gas line with internal stainless steel CRA cladding experienced a failure. This 16-inch pipeline was commissioned early in the year and occasionally used. The failure consisted of circumferential cracking in a girth weld at a pipe bend. The investigation team recommended a complete inspection of all weld joints on this 6-miles (10-km) line. Ultrasonic inline inspection (ILI) was the only feasible means to inspect this line, and doing so required that a liquid coupling medium be introduced. Due to the importance of the pipeline, a sequence of two inspection runs was...

Harsco/Hammco Ships 100,000th ASME-Certified Cooler Section

Tulsa, OK-based Harsco Industrial Air-X-Changers/Hammco (HAXC/Hammco), a producer of cooling systems for natural gas compression and processing, oil refining and other applications, has reached a major milestone in shipping its 100,000th ASME-certified cooler section. The cooling section is a core component of an HAXC Model 156 EH cooler, a vertical-discharge, forced-draft cooler combining engine and compressor cooling in a single, compact unit. The cooler shipped April 21 to be deployed in the Permian Basin of West Texas in a gas compression package manufactured by Exterran Corp. for the gas compression services firm Archrock. The package...

Case Study: Mexssub Repairs Leaking, Bent Pipeline in Gulf of Mexico

June 2017, Vol. 244, No. 6

A leading oil and gas company engaged the Mexssub team in commercial discussions in May 2012. The company wanted to restore the mechanical integrity of a pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico. A leak in the 30-inch horizontal pipeline occurred and initially the operator installed a temporary mechanical clamp. A few months later, a ship’s anchor dragged across the pipeline, causing a significant bend to the line where the leak originally occurred. As a result of this second crisis, the operator was forced to consider a costly shutdown of the pipeline during repair. Recognizing the...

Milliken Infrastructure Brings Solution to Polyethylene Repair

May 2017, Vol. 244, No. 5

Polyethylene (PE) pipe is a staple of the gas distribution industry, but it has always had a major challenge when it comes to repair. Due to its resistance to bonding applications, the only way to repair damaged PE pipe has been to completely remove the damaged portion and splice in new pipe through welding or fusion, a practice that is costly, time-consuming and then risks the integrity of the abutting pipe. Milliken Infrastructure Solutions has long been an innovator in the area of infrastructure repair, and once again they’ve made their mark on this industry....

Dolphin-Inspired Sensors Improve Detection

March 2017, Vol. 244, No. 3

Sensor technology inspired by Bottlenose Dolphins could help extend the life of oil and gas pipelines by using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to detect blockages, thanks to a new collaborative research project in Scotland. The initiative, which involves Heriot-Watt University’s Ocean Systems Laboratory, high-tech sonar and underwater systems company, Hydrason Solutions, and CENSIS, the Scottish Innovation Center for sensor and imaging systems, will develop an enhanced wideband sonar system based on the principles of the marine mammals’ detection capabilities. Using signal processing techniques gleaned from previous research conducted on Bottlenose Dolphins, the project will dramatically...
