Hearing Set on Natural Gas Pipeline in Maryland
HANCOCK, Md. (AP) — Maryland environmental regulators are holding a hearing on whether to award a permit for a pipeline that would carry natural gas under the Potomac River.
The Washington Post reports activists who have spent much of the year trying to block what’s called the Potomac Pipeline will have a chance to testify at the hearing Tuesday evening in Hancock.
The 3.5-mile (6-kilometer) pipeline being developed by TransCanada would carry natural gas from Pennsylvania to West Virginia, bisecting the narrowest part of Maryland’s panhandle.
Proponents say the pipeline will be safe and will help bring economic development to an area that needs it.
Opponents say the project will threaten drinking water supplies and commit further commit the region to fossil fuels.
