Piedmont Natural Gas Wants to Build New Pipeline Beneath North Carolina River

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Piedmont Natural Gas is asking for permission to build a new natural gas line under the Cape Fear River to help it serve Wilmington.

The StarNews (http://bit.ly/2gjZFWm ) reports that the utility has applied for permits to build a 10-inch line under the river. The current 8-inch line would be emptied and capped.

The request says Piedmont Natural Gas would need to build 2 miles of new pipeline and realign some pipes leading to the river.

Piedmont Natural Gas spokesman David Trusty says removing the old pipe would damage the environment more than just capping it.
