Enbridge gets permit for U.S.-Canada pipeline

The U.S. State department issued a permit August 20 allowing the Alberta Clipper pipeline to be constructed between Alberta’s oil sands and Minnesota.

Enbridge’s proposed pipeline drew protests from environmental advocates, since the pipeline will increase the amount of crude oil flowing from Canada to the United States and the greater refining costs of oil sands resources contribute to greenhouse gas buildup. However, the State Department contends reductions in carbon emissions are better handled through domestic policy, rather than reductions in supply.
